Everything worth knowing about Telenoda

How chats, communities, security and bots work. If you can't find an answer, write to the support chat in the app.

General questions

What is Telenoda?

A cloud messenger for private chats, groups, channels and calls. Messages are stored on the server in encrypted form, so they are available from all your devices and aren't lost along with your phone. Learn more on the Features page.

Which devices does Telenoda work on?

On iPhone with iOS 17 and later, on Android 6.0 and later, and in the browser at web.telenoda.org. Details are on the Apps page.

How much does Telenoda cost?

Telenoda is free to use.

How do I report a violation?

Open the message, profile, group or channel and choose “Report”. Reports are reviewed by moderators.

The rules are described in the Terms of Service.

How can I check whether everything is working?

The Service status page shows the current state and incident history.

Basics

How do I sign up?

Enter your phone number and confirm it in one of these ways:

  • if Telenoda is already open on another of your devices, the code will arrive there;
  • a robot will call your number — the code is the last four digits of the calling number;
  • you call the number shown in the app yourself, free of charge;
  • via Yandex ID, if the number in your Yandex profile matches.

We don't send SMS.

How do I sign in to the web version?

Open web.telenoda.org and scan the QR code with the Telenoda app on your phone. The sign-in is confirmed on the phone where you're already signed in.

How do I find friends?

Allow the app to access your contacts: it sends not the numbers themselves but their hashes, and shows which of your friends are already on Telenoda. You can also find a person by username using search.

Who sees when I was online?

You decide: everyone, only contacts or nobody, plus exceptions for specific people. If you hide your own last seen, you only see an approximate one for others: “recently”, “within a week”, “within a month”.

While you are typing or recording a voice message in an open chat, the other person sees you online.

Can I edit or delete a sent message?

Yes. An edited message is marked. You can delete it for yourself or for everyone in the chat.

What is “Saved Messages”?

A chat with yourself. Keep notes, links and files there — they'll be on all your devices.

Groups and channels

What's the difference between a group and a channel?

In a group, all members write, and there can be up to 200,000 of them. In a channel, admins publish, and there can be up to 10 million subscribers. Comments on channel posts can be enabled through a discussion group.

What are topics?

A large group can be split into topics — separate feeds for different conversations. Admins create and close topics.

How do I invite people?

Send an invite link like me.telenoda.org/+code or, if the community has a public address, a link like me.telenoda.org/address. A link can have an expiry date, a limit on joins and request approval, and you can revoke one you no longer need.

What tools do admins have?

Individual rights for each admin, time-limited member restrictions, slow mode, join requests, recent actions, statistics, scheduled posts and author signatures.

Are there polls?

Yes, in groups and channels: regular polls, multiple-answer polls and quizzes with a correct answer and an explanation. In a channel, a poll is always anonymous.

Security

Are my messages encrypted?

Yes, all the way:

  • in transit — TLS 1.3 with post-quantum key exchange;
  • on the server — AES-256, every chat has its own key, keys are stored separately from the data;
  • on the device — the app's local database is encrypted.
Is it end-to-end encryption?

No. Regular chats are cloud-based: the server can decrypt messages to deliver them to all your devices and show history in the browser. Secret chats with end-to-end encryption are not available yet.

Call media is encrypted between the participants' devices.

Why post-quantum key exchange?

Traffic recorded today may be decrypted in the future on a quantum computer. Hybrid key exchange protects against this: to read the recording, an attacker would have to break two different algorithms at once.

What does “pinned server key” mean?

The iPhone and Android apps know our server's key in advance and trust no one else. A forged certificate, even one issued by a certificate authority, won't work. Browsers can't do this, so the web version relies on the regular certificate check for web.telenoda.org.

Does the other person see my IP address during a call?

No. By default, calls go through our relay, and the other person only sees its address.

What do notification services see?

Only the placeholder “New message” and the unread count. The sender's name and the text are encrypted with your device's key and decrypted on the device itself.

Does the Telenoda team read my messages?

Staff don't read private chats. Moderators only see messages attached to a report.

Learn more in the Privacy Policy.

Account

What happens when someone signs in from a new device?

A sign-in notification appears on your other devices. If it wasn't you, terminate the session — the device will lose access.

Why do I need a PIN?

The PIN is set during sign-up. Without it, nobody can sign in to the account on a new device, even if they obtained the verification code. Never share the code or the PIN with anyone.

I lost my phone. What should I do?

Sign in from another device and terminate the lost phone's session in the device list. Messages are stored in the cloud, so they will appear on your new phone after you sign in.

How do I change my phone number?

In the account settings. The new number is confirmed the same way as during sign-up.

How do I delete my account?

Open “Settings → Privacy → Delete account” and confirm the deletion with your PIN. All sessions will end, your phone number and username will be freed, and the messages you sent will remain with the recipients.

How data is handled on deletion is described in the Privacy Policy.

Bots

What are bots?

Accounts controlled by programs. A bot responds to commands, sends notifications, shows buttons and opens mini apps — stores, forms, games.

Can a bot see my messages?

In a private chat — the ones you sent to it. In a group, by default a bot only receives commands, mentions and replies to its own messages. A bot can't see other chats. A bot can't message you first.

Who receives what I write to a bot?

The bot's owner — a third-party developer. They process this data under their own rules, and Telenoda doesn't give the bot your phone number unless you share it yourself.

Are mini apps safe?

A mini app opens only on domains the bot's owner specified in advance, in a separate window with no access to your account. Telenoda asks for permission before the first launch.

How do I make my own bot?

Message @botcreator in Telenoda, send /newbot and get a token. Then follow the developer guide.

If something doesn't work

The call with the code doesn't come

Check the number and wait a minute. If there is no call, choose another method: call yourself or sign in with Yandex ID.

The app keeps showing “Connecting…”

Check your internet connection and update the app to the latest version.

If that doesn't help, check the Service status page.

Notifications don't arrive

Allow notifications for Telenoda in the system settings. In the browser, allow notifications for web.telenoda.org.
